Career history
As
Deputy General Secretary of ICLEI
- Local Governments for Sustainability (2013-2018), Monika Zimmermann has contributed significantly to the content and strategic development of the world's largest city network for sustainability.
International processes and UN conferences (climate, biodiversity, Habitat), the development of new topics (eg Local Action for Biodiversity, Resilient Cities) as well as training and support of sub-national decision-makers characterised her tasks.
As
Deputy Executive Director of the ICLEI World Secretariat
(2013-2018) she was co-responsible for securing and managing financial resources, administration, team development, as well as the acquisition and management of multi-regional projects and their controlling.
Previously, she led the ICLEI Capacity Center (2010-2012), as well as the International Training Center at the ICLEI European Secretariat (1993-2010).
Working as social scientist at the
IfS Institute for Urban Research Berlin
(1982-1993), she was responsible for studies on environmentally sound procurement, environmentally friendly large-scale events, and environmental management processes.

Monika Zimmermann has worked in and with boards of national and international organizations (eg Deutscher Naturschutzring) since her youth. Her professional and voluntary work has included leading such organisations, representing their positions, motivating people, negotiating compromises and managing coordination processes.

Professional educationMonika Zimmermann studied administration, political science and journalism in Konstanz and at the FU Berlin and graduated in political science (Diplom-Politologin).
